Necklaces like any other type of jewelry have to be properly maintained for its luster to last. Not only will cleaning it make it shiny; it will also prevent the chains from breaking due to dirt and dust. The gems that your necklace may have will shine brighter when it is cleaned well. It’s important for instructions to be followed and this varies according to the material the necklace is made of.
It’s easy to wash a gold necklace without any gems or stones on it. You just have to wash it using warm water and some dishwashing liquid. Rub the chains gently with your fingers. Soft brush can also be used on the necklace when it has chains that are a bit large. Don’t use toothpaste or baking soda since it can be abrasive in nature.
Silver necklaces often tarnish faster than gold. They get tarnished when they are exposed to air. This means they often require extra care compared to other type of jewelry. You can use a silver polishing cloth to give your silver necklace an extra shine. It also needs a tarnish remover. For silver necklaces that have thick braids, toothbrush and toothpaste are needed for cleaning. Rinse the necklace with warm water and use a dry cloth with no lint for drying. There are toothpaste brands that are too abrasive; hence to be safe it’s better to stick with the silver polish. You may also opt for your own cleaning dip made from mixing hot water added with a few tablespoons of salt as well as baking soda.
If the necklace has gemstones or intricate designs like butterfly necklaces make sure that you give it additional care. Wipe it with a damp cloth and avoid putting pressure on it or else the gems might loosen from the setting. Make sure that the necklaces are kept flat or hanging when they are not used.
